How long is the online course?

The on-line course is equivalent to an 8 hour classroom course. The time it takes to complete the course will depend on how fast a person reads (there are some videos to watch as well). However, none of the chapters of the course are timed. Once the chapters are completed, you must take the course Exam. The exam has a one hour (60 minute) time limit, and you will be given two attempts to pass the exam. If you fail the first exam the second exam will be a completely different exam. Once you have completed the exam you will be asked to complete a course evaluation, your answers are voluntary.

You may complete the chapters in increments. Once you complete a chapter, you will have a choice to go to the next chapter, or log off and return later to continue.

The DMV requires a minimum of 42,500 word count for a non-classroom course; this course meets that requirement and is equivalent to an 8 hour classroom course.
Am I eligible for traffic violators course?

Pursuant to Vehicle Code section 1808.7, the following situations are not eligible for masking a traffic safety violation on a California driver record:

1. The driver has already attended a traffic violator course within 18 months of the conviction.
2. The driver holds a commercial license as defined in Vehicle Code section 15210.

- For violations occurring 01/01/2013 and after, a commercial license holder may be allowed to attend traffic school for a violation committed in a personal vehicle, but only if there is no failure to appear and only for the purpose of counting negligent operation points. The point will not be marked as confidential for insurance purposes.
- For violations occurring 12/31/2012 and before, a commercial license holder may not attend traffic school regardless of the vehicle they were driving.

3. The driver holds a commercial driver license from out of state.
4. The violation occurred in a commercial motor vehicle as defined in Vehicle Code section 15210.
5. The violator has not paid a deposit of fees or bail, and has not pleaded guilty, no contest, or been convicted by the court of jurisdiction.
6. The conviction would result in a violation point count of more than one point pursuant to Vehicle Code section 12810. A list of Vehicle Code two point violations may be found on the Department of Motor Vehicles web site, www.dmv.ca.gov.
7. “This site will require your California driver license or California identification number, the name of the court with jurisdiction or the identifying court code, docket number, section(s) violated, and your violation date. These are requirements for receiving a completion receipt and to have the information sent to the court of jurisdiction should you successfully pass this course. If you are unable to provide the required information, your participation shall not be credited toward satisfying the requirement.”
Why should I take a class?

The advantage to attending a Traffic Violators course is to mask a California violation on your driving record. You may have a California violation masked on your driving record as long as there was no previous violation masked in the previous 18 months.

Completing this course may also earn you a discount on your automobile insurance (Please check with your individual insurance company to see if they accept this course for a discount.)

Many employers require proof that you have completed a defensive driving course as a condition of employment.
Can I use someone else's computer or Internet service?

You can take this course from home, work, a friend or family's house, or your local library. Whatever computer you use, you simply need Internet access. You can also start on your own computer and then finish on another. You just need your user name and password to log in.
What happens if I fail the Exam?

If you fail the exam you will be given the opportunity to take a 2nd (completely different exam). You must pass this exam within 7 days of taking the first exam and with a score of 70% or better. Remember you have the ability to review the chapters to find the answers during the exam. If you fail the exam a second time you would have to take the course with another school. That will require paying another payment for that school’s course.
What’s the difference between a CDL (commercial driver’s license) and an operator’s license?

A CDL is for professional drivers (truck drivers, bus drivers, etc.). If you possess, or possessed at the time of your violation, a CDL, please see question 'Am I eligible for traffic violators course?' for more details on Eligibility for CDLs
How do I cancel the online course?

Please call our office between 730am - 4pm Monday thru Friday to cancel the course. This must be done prior to starting the course to receive a refund. If a person has paid for but not started the course, the school may refund the full amount minus a $9.95 administrative fee. Any requests for refunds must be made within 180 days of initial payment. Once the course is started the student is not entitled to a refund.
How often can I take a Traffic Violator course?

You may attend a traffic violator course once every 18 months. The 18 months of ineligibility is from violation date to violation date. For example, if you received a violation on 3/15/2012, you will be eligible again for a defensive driving class for a violation occurring on or after 8/15/2013.
Why are some violations not eligible?

If conviction would result in a violation point count of more than one point pursuant to Vehicle Code section 12810, that violation would not be eligible to be masked. A list of Vehicle Code two point violations may be found on the Department of Motor Vehicles web site, www.dmv.ca.gov.
When do I get my Completion Receipt?

Once you complete the course you will immediately be able to view and print your Completion Receipt. For students who purchased the "Red Light" package or are taking the course as a "Volunteer", this will be the only opportunity for you to download your Completion Receipt for your records. If you purchased the "Yellow" or "Green Light" packages, a copy of your Completion Receipt will also be immediately emailed to you for your records.
